Once, written and directed by the bassist of the featured group of musicians who call themselves The Frames, is marketed as a musical which immediately turned me off. very risky way of marketing any film unless it's on Broadway if you ask me...but you didn't...so I guess I'm telling you. The only two reasons I ended up seeing it is because I depend on my local theater to choose good independant films to show and the reviews for this film are "brilliant", a word used often during the show and my new personal favorite word...brilliant and cool...cool's the other one. The lead singer in the band is actually the lead character in the film. It is a film full of music, but if I hadn't known ahead of time, I would have probably not labeled it as a musical. It totally rehashed what my definition of a musical is. The movie's set in Dublin so the English is just fun to listen to...the music is fantastic which also means that it's fun to listen to (I just picked up the c.d.)...the guitar is much like the Takamine that I have (many thanks to Lisa and Matt)...the drums are very similar to my old Pearl drumset...the girl is, well, she's just hard to explain...
The essence of the film is basically simple and refreshing. There's a starving artist really sensitive emotional musician guy, there's a beautiful girl who's simple but equally as powerful, and there's simply the right time and the right place. It's definitely a feel good show without the cheesiness of a fairy tale "and they lived happily ever after" ending...the ending (hoping not to give anything away) is probably the most complicated part of the film. Just a great film overall.
A bit of a tangent...I have so much fun inviting a friend over and just walking to the pizza/gyro shack to pick up a "new york slice" to-go and walking to the theater where such great independant films are shown. It makes my heart beat slower.
