This is crazy! I thought it was bad down there...then I watched a bit on BBC international news and sourthern Minnesota and northern Iowa were highlighted following, of all things going on around the world, the latest living conditions in Ethiopia. well, my college town of Decorah, Iowa in northeastern Iowa is a beautiful little river town usually...now, it is not doing well at all. it's actually freakishly flooded. i am seriously wondering if I should get down there to help! check out some of the photos here!

A huge thank you to all of the amazing people of Decorah who are endlessly watching out for neighbors, family, and strangers all the same. Despite incredible sandbagging and pumping efforts, some houses on the West side and in the extreme east end of the flats have very serious flood damage. Thankfully, there are no fatalities from this disaster.
This is officially the highest flood in recorded history for the NE Iowa area, however there are neighboring parts of this region that are being hit even harder.
Our thoughts go out to everyone who is up for a second night in a row, pumping, pushing, and carrying water…. think dry

pretty crazy shit!
actually, 7-3:30, for a few weeks here. so I haven't felt this type of Sunday night for, shit, ya know with a full week ahead of me but off in the evenings...planning dinners, movies, maybe climbing at the gym?!...I don't know! but it's been years...like, 6? the painting business in Durango? even then the hours were screwy. I had a full time day job in 1998! really!? 10 f'n years? no joke. it's a crazy world you people live in. a crazy crazy world.

headed up to The Arrowhead this past weekend. This region is my favorite in the entire midwest. The way that the most fresh water in the world drains into the largest freshwater lake in the world is simply amazing. A friend and I continued on the trail that I hiked 80 miles of a couple summers ago. I've now completed 110 miles total of the superior hiking trail, consistently rated as one of the top 10 trails in the u.s. The trail heads up the north shore of Minnesota (considered to be the healthiest state in 2006 according to Jeopardy today...I'm not so sure...if you've seen the Minnesota State Fair you would know what I'm talking about. I'll put some of those photos up after heading to that this summer so you non-midwestern folks in my 'hood understand what I'm saying) from the city of Duluth, MN to Canada for a total of about 250 miles. The original trail consists of 202 miles from Two Harbors, MN to Canada. The addition of Duluth to Two Harbors is a fairly recent one.

It's late. I should be in bed. My last shift at the hospital I've been at for 4.5 years is tomorrow...well, actually in 5.5 hours. My performance at this point can be pretty lacking with no repercussion, really. I deserve it. I'm not worried...although, by bringing it up at all may give you the impression that I am worried a bit. well, I guess I was a little bit until now.
So, the section my buddy Gale and I covered went from an icon of camping areas to me, that being Gooseberry Falls. My absolute favorite camping place as a kid. I remember going there with my mom...just me and my mom. We had a blast playing scrabble in the tent while it was raining. I had a blast bouldering around on massive boulders on the shore of Lake Superior just below a massive cliff line. My mom wasn't worried, thankfully. She was just so happy with how much fun I was having. I think I can relate a bit. I feel that way when Malto is really happy hiking with me, exploring, sniffing around, living free. So, so rewarding.
right now i'm making a dessert for the hospital crew as a parting gift. here's the recipe!
1pkg chocolate cake mix
1 pkg 3.9 oz instant chocolate instant pudding mix
2 Cups sour cream
4 eggs
1 cup water
3/4 Cup vegetable oil
1 Cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Mix all but chips for 2 minutes, then add chocolate chips. Then add to a 5 quart slow cooker coated with nonstick cooking spray and cover and cook for 6-7 hours. Don't peek!
how slick is that? I added raspberries and raspberry sauce this time. Topped with Cool Whip, it should be a winner. I'm so excited!

]]>Canoed the 20+ miles from Lake Minnetonka basically to the Mississippi yesterday. such a great time! Classic, Classic Minneapolis experience. the conditions were perfect, the beers tasted great, the sun was out, the company was great (an old high school buddy). I can't believe I had never done it before!
There's something about The Lakers that really bothers me, always has and always will...
